FURKID FEVER *** Edson, Alberta, Canada

I have two dogs; a miniature black poodle, Nicky, and a Miniature Pinscher/terrier mix, Halley. I confess…I have dressed them in doggie clothes. Christmas 2007 (we didn’t have Halley yet) I looked everywhere for a cute outfit for Nicky and finally settled for one that was only okay. I wish I had known about Fern Vessel!

Fern Vessel is the designer and seamstress who makes the adorable outfits I came across while browsing Etsy for possible features. Her clever shop name, Furkid Fever, is perfect because there does seem to be a lot of interest in dressing our four-legged family members. Most pet shops, Target and Wal*Mart all carry clothes for our pets and Doggie Boutiques and Doggy Deli’s have sprung up everywhere, carrying practically anything you could want to lavish on your precious pups.

There are people (and I know several) who scoff at the idea of dressing animals and look at you as if you have lost your mind when they see your nattily attired furbaby. They don’t mind telling you what they think of the whole idea. Fine….everyone is entitled to their opinion but…do they have to be so rude? I don’t tell them how goofy they look in their clothes even though they could certainly use some fashion tips!

Back to Fern and her dog clothing. She has been dressing dogs since she and her sister were little girls. They redesigned people clothing to make outfits for their dogs and entered them in pet fashion contests. When there weren’t any contests at hand, they held their own in their backyard.

Eight years ago, Fern started making dog clothing for her male Yorkie, Max. Of course, her friends and family wanted her to make outfits for their dogs and finally convinced her that they were so good, she should be selling them.

Fern (and her sister) learned to sew at a very young age, taught by her mom. By the age of twelve, she had made her first quilt, a gingham and apple appliqué which she is still proud of. She has been sewing ever since, making everything from embroidered tea towels to human (and furkids) wedding gowns. In fact, the most time she has ever spent on a dog outfit was approximately 39 hours, creating a wedding gown for a Yorkshire Terrier.

Her inspiration for new outfits are, not surprisingly, her two Yorkies, Max and Mindee (the adorable models in the photos).

In addition to her Etsy shop, Fern sells on eBay and wholesales to a few shops in the USA. Doggy Style Deli, a restaurant for dogs, carries her clothing line exclusively. As if she weren’t busy enough, she now has a website, Furkid Fever , which went live on June 15th.

Take a look at Fern’s Etsy shop and website and, if you don’t see the perfect outfit for your furkid, don’t worry; she does custom orders!
